History

According to a magazine article from June 1910, the choir and bell ringers so enjoyed a game of bowls on the rectory lawn that they played again the following year.  This inspired some villagers to call a meeting on 4th March 1913 to discuss the possibility of forming a bowls club.

The then Rector, Reverend Callis, presided.  It was decided that a club should be formed, that the subscription should be 2/6d and that a suitable ground should be sought.

The following officers were elected:
President: Mr A Churchman (later Lord Woodbridge)
Vice President: Rev. A W Callis
Club Captain: Mr Page
Vice Captain: Mr O Cole
Hon. Treasurer: Mr H N Scales
Hon. Secretary: Mr T James
The Committee to be Messrs Ginger, Gray, Bagley, Rivers, Mee
The following were elected as members:  H Mee, O Cole, C Richardson, F Richardson, T Crissall, C Freeman, Hyde, Briggs, H Ford and H Markham

The club was formally opened by Mr A Churchman on Saturday 10th May 1913 on some land near the Rectory, now Beech Close.

Games were held on this green for some years and a pavilion was built for the use of the players.  Records show that a bowling green was opened at The Wild Man Public House later.

Then in the late 1950’s, a playing field was laid out off Church Lane in Sproughton.  Besides a football pitch and tennis courts, there was a bowling green which is home to Sproughton Bowls Club today.  The prime movers for the playing field were Archdeacon C George and Dennis Mee and the field was opened officially in 1962 by Ray Crawford of Ipswich Town Football Club.
